Erich Mäus works in Düsseldorf, grappling with what he sees as the fundamental paradox of our time: as our tools grow more sophisticated, our grasp of ourselves may be weakening.
His paintings emerge from this tension, particularly in works like "Monads" where human consciousness appears as isolated functions - a digital echo of Leibniz's vision, each self now a remote interface, decoupled and isolated, yet harmonized by protocols.
In "The Copilot," Mäus interrogates the blurring line between human and machine cognition. The work suggests that our relationship with artificial intelligence may be less about enhancement or replacement and more about a mutual transformation that we've only begun to understand.
Through classical technique married to contemporary subjects, Mäus's work poses essential questions: What persists of human consciousness when mediated through digital systems? How do we maintain authentic existence in an environment increasingly shaped by algorithmic processes? His art offers no easy answers, but instead creates spaces for genuine philosophical contemplation and emotional retracing.
